Broadband in Action: Empowering Emergency Response in Marshall County
In Marshall County, Kansas, broadband isn’t just a convenience - it’s a critical tool for public safety. Under the leadership of Director William “Toad” Schwindamann, Jr. and Assistant Director Sara Naaf, the Marshall County Emergency Management team relies on high-speed fiber from Blue Valley Technologies (BVT) to respond faster, communicate smarter, and prepare more effectively for disasters.
Connectivity That Saves Lives
Reliable broadband powers the office’s internet and phone systems, but its impact goes far beyond daily operations. During emergencies, fast internet enables the team to access NOAA radar, weather updates, mapping tools, and the mass-alert system, Everbridge - all in real time.
“Not having to worry about internet connectivity is a huge relief,” said Naaf. “We need to pull up data, connect resources, and send alerts quickly and efficiently - especially during stressful times.”
Smarter Communication, Wider Reach
Broadband has transformed how the team communicates with the public. From the Everbridge alerts and email updates to a growing presence on social media, the office is building trust and engagement across the county.
“One of the best ways to reduce risk is to educate and empower citizens,” Naaf explained. “Social media gives us another avenue to share potentially lifesaving information.”
The team’s short-term goal is to post regular videos and content to build a following - so when emergencies do strike, they have multiple trusted channels to reach the public.
Faster Coordination, Stronger Preparedness
Broadband also streamlines coordination with other agencies and supports training efforts across schools, care homes, and first responder units. From tabletop exercises to full-scale simulations, the team is exploring AI tools and immersive formats to make training more impactful.
“We’re excited to see what we can create to help our community,” Naaf said. “Reliable, fast broadband is a must to make that happen.”
Reaching Rural Communities More Effectively
Fiber broadband allows the team to connect with rural and underserved areas - places where traditional communication methods often fall short.
“Having more avenues of connection helps us share vital, potentially lifesaving information with more people,” Naaf emphasized.
Partnering for Progress
BVT’s community-first approach strengthens emergency efforts - from providing free Wi-Fi at outdoor events to expanding broadband access across city parks in Marysville, Blue Rapids, and Frankfort – thanks to a grant from the Kansas Office of Broadband Development BVT received earlier this year.
“Blue Valley has always been very community-focused, and our goals align well,” Naaf said. “When multiple agencies come together for the greater good, the results are undeniable.”
Looking Ahead
Marshall County Emergency Management is committed to staying ahead of technology trends and applying innovative tools to better serve the public.
“The peace of mind, speed, and reliability of fiber broadband is a necessity for day-to-day operations - and can have an incredible impact during an emergency or disaster response,” Naaf concluded.
