Reliable broadband has become a cornerstone of community and economic growth in rural Kansas. For Ryan Kern, director of Washington County Economic Development & Tourism, connectivity is essential to helping businesses thrive, attracting new opportunities, and showcasing the county’s strengths.

Reenergizing Economic Development

Ryan assumed the role of Washington County’s Economic Development Director in June 2024, following years without the county having a dedicated economic development or tourism representative. Today, he is helping shine a light on Washington County’s rich history, businesses, and exceptional quality of life.

“Washington County has a lot of great history and businesses, both large and small – with a quality of life that’s by far the best around,” Ryan shared. His work centers on connecting businesses to resources, promoting the region, and building partnerships at the county, regional, and state levels.

Connectivity as a Daily Essential

For Washington County’s development efforts, broadband is not optional - it’s critical.

“Reliable internet is an important piece for economic development,” he explained. “We use virtual meetings constantly to coordinate on projects with partners across the region and state.”

Broadband also fuels the county’s communication efforts. From promoting events to highlighting local businesses, Washington County’s Facebook page has become a valuable tool for visibility and outreach.

With fiber now available to homes and businesses in communities including Linn, Palmer, Hanover, and Washington, residents and employers have seen the benefits of faster speeds, smoother communication, and improved efficiency. “This type of connectivity has helped businesses and residents by allowing faster download times — crucial for many activities,” Ryan noted.

Strong broadband has also become an important tool for recruiting and supporting businesses. “Reliable internet gives businesses the opportunity to react quicker and work more efficiently,” Ryan said. “It plays a major role in supporting current businesses and attracting new ones.”

Washington County has been a longtime BVT customer, and Ryan has experienced the service both professionally and at home.
